Come join the shire of Glyn Dwfn as we unveil our brand new event, Táin Bó, The Great Cattle Raid! 
This unique event will be a 3 day camping event that is first and foremost...a shire war!

The great thing about Táin Bó and the activities above is that almost everything you do at the event earns battle points for your shire! Not only will you earn participation points for the activities you are part of or the service you contribute, but we will also be awarding major points to those shires that win in those areas!

 

We will begin the festivities on Friday night with a mercenaries auction.  Each shire will want to bring gifts to bribe the mercenaries.  Baked goods, alcohol, trinkets, and sweets (but please no actual money).  Mercenaries will sell their services either as individuals or as a group.  Mercenaries are not limited to fighters.  Craftsman and volunteers are also encouraged to sell their services.  Mercenaries can sell their services for a single contest or for the whole event.  A mercenary could, for instance, fight for Myrtleholt in the morning and Briar Oak in the afternoon.

Martial Activities

At this event we will be having a wide variety of marshal scenarios to fit all tastes.  We will be having Heavy Armored combat, Rapier combat, Youth Armored combat, Cut and Thrust combat, Archery, and Thrown Weapons.

The weekend will be jam packed full of combat scenarios so come early and be prepared to battle. Combat areas will be divided into two fields: the war field and the tourney field. Archery and thrown weapons will happen on the archery courses.

 

Heavy Combat:

9:00-Armor check, list sign up
10:00-Capture the Flag war scenario

11:30-Castle Siege war scenario

1:00-lunch

2:00-Belted tourney and non-belted tourney

3:30-Youth Armored combat tourney
5:30-End combat scenarios

 

Rapier Combat:

9:00-Armor check, list sign up
10:00-Scarved and non-scarved tourney
11:30-Cut and Thrust tourney
1:00-lunch

2:00-Capture the Flag war scenario

3:30-Castle Siege war scenario
5:30-End combat scenarios

 

Capture the Flag war scenario (Rapier and Heavy):

This is an infinite res scenario with no ranged weapons.

In this scenario each shire shall arrange themselves as native forces (with mercenaries).  Each force will carry a banner to represent their army.  The objective is for a single army to capture all of the banners.  Each team will need a designated banner holder.  This banner holder can still fight, they must simply carry the banner as well.  This banner holder must  have control of the flag.  If the banner holder is killed then the army that did the killing gains control of the banner holder and the banner holder's army.  When an army is captured all banners that were controlled by that army are dead and need to resurrect.  This frees the army.  So, if Green team captures Red team and Purple team, and then Yellow team captures Green team, both Red and Purple banner holder need to resurrect and Red and Purple team are both free teams.

When a team is captured all units fight for the capturing army.  So if Green team captures Red team and a Red team fighter kills the Purple banner holder, Green team controls the Purple team.

The scenario ends when one army has total control of all of the banners.  We will run one practice round and then the actual battle.  If there is time left over we will break into equal forces and run the scenario a third time.

The winner of this will receive two war gems.

 

Castle Siege war scenario (Rapier and Heavy):

This scenario will have infinite res for the attackers and a single life for the defenders.  Defenders only will be allowed to use ranged weapons.

In this scenario each shire will attempt to hold a castle against the rest of the forces for as long as possible.  This will be a timed scenario with the winner being the shire that can hold out the longest.  In order to take the castle all defending forces must be killed or routed.  The castle will be a wooden castle facade complete with arrow slits to allow for ranged attacks from inside the castle.

There will be one practice round where all mercenaries will be defending the castle.  We will then run through each shire, picked randomly.  If there is still time after every shire has gone we will break in half and run through the scenario with equal forces and no resurrection on either side.

The winner of this will receive two war gems.

 

Belted and Non-Belted Tourney:

We will be running two different heavy tournaments at the same time.  One tournament will be for all belted fighters.  This includes knights, sergeants, squires, and current defenders.  The second tournament will be for all non-belted fighters.

Both tournaments will be double elimination, bring your best.  If either tournament has less than five fighters it will be run as a round robin tourney.

The winner of this will receive two war gems.

 

Scarved and Non-Scarved tourney:

We will be running two different rapier tournaments at the same time.  One tournament will be for all scarved fighters.  This includes white scarves, cadets, and current defenders.  The second tournament will be for all non-scarved fighters.

Both tournaments will be double elimination, bring your best.  If either tournament has less than five fighters it will be run as a round robin tourney.

The winner of this will receive two war gems.

 

Youth Armored Combat:

This tournament will be run following the heavy tournaments.  It will be run as a double elimination, unless there are less than five fighters, in which case it will be a round robin tourney.

There will be a war gem awarded for the winner in each age category.

 

Cut and Thrust Tournament:

This tournament will be run following the rapier tournament.  It will be run as a double elimination, unless there are less than five fighters, in which case it will be a round robin tourney.

The winner of this will receive one war gem.

Archery:

We will be hosting a number of archery scenarios as well.  Archery will run from 10:00 until 3:00 on Saturday with an hour long break for lunch.  All archers and throwers are encouraged to attempt the contests multiple times.  They will be counted for the highest score throughout the day.

Long Range Archery:

We will be having a competition for long range archery shooters.  This will consist of shooting at three different sets of targets.  Each archery will shoot one flight of 12 arrows at each target.  For archers that do not have 12 arrows they may fire 6 arrows with each arrow being worth double points.

The first target will be a standard target at 60 yards.  Scoring will be based on the standard royal round scoring convention (1-5 points).

The second target will be a group of 5 man sized targets at 80 yards.  Each hit on a man sized target will result in three points.

The third target will be a single hay bale within a 10 foot radius circle at 100 yards.  If an arrow hits the hay bale it will be awarded 10 points.  Each arrow inside the circle will receive a number of points equal to the amount of feet it is away from the nearest circle edge (round down).

Archers shooting in the morning and the afternoon will be compiled into one list and the overall winner will receive one war gem.

 

Royal Rounds:

We will be doing royal rounds for both archery and thrown weapons.  These will be done in the standard manner with the scores being recorded and reported.

Likewise throwers throwing in the morning and the afternoon will be compiled into one list and the overall winner will receive one war gem.

 

Trail Course Archery:

For our second Tain Bo specific archery event we will  be having a trail shoot.  This shoot will consist of five different targets.  Each archer will shoot two arrows at each target.  All targets will be scored based on the standard royal round scoring.

The first target will be at 20 yards.

The second target will be at 20 yards and will require that the archer be kneeling.

The third target will be at 10 yards and will be moving.

The fourth target will be at 20 yards and will require that the archer quick shoot.

The fifth target will be at 40 yards.

Archers shooting in the morning and the afternoon will be compiled into one list and the overall winner will receive one war gem.

 

Trail Course Thrown:

After the trail course has been used for archery, we will convert it to a thrown weapons course.  Each thrower will be allowed two throws at each target, except that they will be allowed four at the final target.

The first target will be for knives or axes (throwers choice) at 10 feet.

The second target will be for knives or axes (throwers choice) at 10 feet and will require that the thrower be kneeling.

The third target will be for knives or axes (throwers choice) at 10 feet and will be moving.

The fourth target will be for spears at 15 feet.

The fifth target will be for atlatls at 40 feet.  We will be providing atlatls for those who want to try out this interesting new thrown weapon style.

Throwers throwing in the morning and the afternoon will be compiled into one list and the overall winner will receive one war gem.

Sunday:

On Sunday morning we will be hosting a Cut and Thrust workshop.  There will be loaner armor and weapons available for those who are interested.  Whether you are currently a fighter or not you can join in and experience this new combat style.  The minimum armor standards are a rapier style doublet or gambeson, collar bone padding, a rapier style helmet, heavy style elbows, heavy style knees, heavy style hand protection (either full hand or demi-gauntlet), and all skin covered.  Bring what you have and we will supply the rest.

Volunteer Opportunities

Are you wanting to earn battle points for your shire at Tain Bo, but you are not a fighter? Have no fear, you can still earn points: volunteer! We are looking for people to help out in many areas including, marshaling, heralding, judging, water bearing, and BaT Patrol (biffy and trash). People's Feast

We will be having a potluck-style feast. Based on mundane last name, please bring:

A-K Bread or Appetizers
L-R Side Dish
S-Z Dessert

Period (and psuedo period) dishes are preferred but not required

 

Baronial members! Though the winning shire will be determined through that shire populace's participation and prowess in the areas above, baronies and other non-shire affiliated individuals will have a very important role as mercenaries. Friday night, Shires will bid for your services and ask for your help in defeating their foes on the field or through artistic means. Throughout the event as well, you may be asked to contribute to a shire that is in dire need of assistance in winning the war. It will be up to you who you help in their pursuit for the ultimate honor of Táin Bó Champion.

Directions -

If coming Northbound on I-5, take exit 55 which becomes US HWY 199 (Redwood Hwy); if coming Southbound, take exit 58 onto HWY 99, stay right at the fork onto HWY 238, and merge right onto HWY 199 (Redwood Hwy).
Take US HWY 199 (Redwood Hwy) heading towards the coast to Selma, OR. Turn Left on Lake Shore Dr. towards Lake Selmac, just a short distance after the supermarket look for the signs (Parks & SCA).
From the Coast, take US HWY 199 (Redwood Hwy) heading towards the Grants Pass area to Selma, OR. Turn right on Lake Shore Dr. towards Lake Selmac; look for the signs (Parks and SCA).
When approaching Lake Selmac, stay on the left of the lake and drive around the lakes rim, drive past the general store, and follow the SCA signs to parking and event site.
