The position of Local Equestrian Officer (LEO)is generally viewed as a chatelaine to the Horse Community in the local branches such as Shires and Baronies. Currently, in an effort to further develop equestrian activities in the local branches, there is no requirement that this officer be a warranted Marshal.

This individual could typically be someone within the branch, with an interest in horses and horse activities who is willing to facilitate meetings and perhaps act as the Equestrian Autocrat for branch events.

The meetings are usually "horseless", where-in research work could be done, work on barding could be accomplished etc. The officer could even choose to put together "mounted" meetings, BUT when an announcement is made in an official document or at an official meeting, that "mounted meeting" becomes an official SCA horse event and is then subject to the same requirements as any other SCA activity where horses are present:

  1. The Equestrian insurance binder must be in place.
  2. An authorized equestrian marshal must be present.
  3. The proper reports and notification must be forwarded to the Royal Equestrian.
There is nothing that prohibits a group of equestrians from riding together just for fun (so long as it is NOT EVER announced under the auspices of an SCA meeting or publication)

This officer routinely facilitates meetings for interested folks.  The officer has charge of the Equestrian equipment owned by the branch and should work on maintaining and improving it.

The Local Equestrian Officer reports quarterly to the Royal Equestrian (or PEO in the Principalities) regarding the horse activities occurring in the branch. The officer also acts as liaison between autocrats and the equestrian community when events are planned where equestrians have been invited to attend.

If you'd like more information on starting an Equestrian Office in your branch please contact the Royal Equestrian.
